things my prof did on the first day of class

    • greeted us with “hello, classicists”
    • politely requested that we not traumadump in her email inbox
    • brought up clytemnestra 3 separate times, unprompted, during the first 20 minutes. invited us all to her office to look at the full-length clytemnestra painting on her wall
    • as a rule, addresses students by “mr/ms/mx lastname” (it is difficult to bear this with a straight face given that she is likely to follow this up with excited swearing)
    • speaks of the tragedians with a fond exasperation like she knew them personally
    • refers to undergrads, affectionately, as “creatures”
    • went on a passionate diatribe about how pronunciation is stupid because these languages are long dead, thus we are not allowed to correct each other unless ☝️ someone pronounces odysseus as “osyddeus” (this one seemed like it was from personal experience)
    • “i won’t respond to emails after 5pm—” (reasonable) “—because i like to go to bed at 7—” (wait what) “—and i’ll usually wake up around 3” (WHAT THE FUCK)
    • promised to procure costumes and masks for our final project, in which we will stage and perform a scene of our choice in the amphitheatre and be “heckled” by her colleagues

first of all, if you’re still using twitter: WHY!? seriously wtf.

second of all, there’s a terrible version of the future where this is how all social media platforms delve out content. currently we have opaque algorithms dictating the content in users’ feeds but it seems its still largely focused around engagement and whatever will keep you on the app/platform for longer amounts of time which means that it is still somewhat based on users’ interactions with it.

i don’t think i have to explain how switching over to just letting a large language model designed with the platform’s profits and/or political ambitions in mind decide—without user heuristics—your entire social media feed for you is going to be all kinds of fucked up. i mean, its already pretty fucked up currently. but this will be on another level.

the silver lining i guess is that—like nearly all generative ai implementations—this will probably fail to produce the results the companies are looking for. a good enough amount of people don’t really like interacting with chatbots as it is and ai slop mostly receives scorn from everyone but credulous cryptodorks, fascists, and boomers who can’t tell the difference. i can’t imagine this working out.

the scarier part is how these tech companies pushing generative ai onto everything is already starting to replace actual information sources for people which doesn’t bode well for the availability of objective quality up-to-date information or an intelligent well-informed public. (lol an intelligent well-informed public? oh such a thing has never been done!)

generative ai really needs to be killed because it is going to make humanity even stupider and more careless than we already are and its going to take a lot of intelligence and care to save ourselves and the rest of the planet from the mess we’ve made.

so my friend just texted me to see how i’m doing today. i said i’m alright why do you ask. and he said you were wearing more rings than usual today. and i said yeah what’s that got to do with the price of fish. he replied. with. “You wear more rings when you need the extra sensory input in your hands, which is usually correlated to an overall worse mental state because usually you like less sensory input, your max number of rings is 3 or 4. So I thought I’d check on how you’re doing.”

to be loved is to be known but jesus christ please be a little stupider.

okay i know i’m op but ??? @wizardarchetypes this is hilarious to me

i like sailing myths and superstitions because most of them can be boiled down to “if the ocean doesn’t like you it will chew you up and spit out your bones. and if it really loves you it will swallow you whole and keep you forever. good luck 👍”

An edited tumblr post originally made by @queensparklekitten which says "'oh no we're all doomed by the sea' maybe you are. i'm the ocean's favorite." followed by a self reblog comment which says "update: turns out this is not a good thing for me". The entire screenshot has been filtered through an effect which makes it appear as if it's underwater.ALT

best use of the underwater filter on this app
